Abbey Mortgage Bank Eliminates Bad Loans, Transitions to Commercial Banking

Abbey Mortgage Bank Plc has announced a remarkable turnaround by reducing its non-performing loan (NPL) ratio from approximately 80% to zero, a feat achieved through a comprehensive debt recovery initiative. This transformation comes as the bank pivots from its traditional mortgage banking model to a broader commercial banking framework, a change that was disclosed by the bank’s CEO, Mobolaji Adewumi, during a media briefing in Lagos.

The significance of this transition cannot be overstated. With a legacy of substantial debts inherited in 2020, Abbey Mortgage Bank's successful recovery efforts signal a robust commitment to financial health and sustainability. By addressing long-standing debts dating back to 2007 and 2008, the bank has not only improved its balance sheet but also positioned itself to capitalize on new opportunities in the commercial banking sector. The move is particularly timely, as the Central Bank of Nigeria has been encouraging banks to diversify their offerings to stimulate economic growth.

Looking ahead, Abbey Mortgage Bank plans to leverage its new commercial banking license to expand its services beyond mortgages, targeting sectors such as property development and building materials. The bank's strategy includes a digital-first approach combined with a physical presence across eight locations, which could enhance its competitive edge in a market dominated by larger institutions. Investors and stakeholders will be keen to monitor how Abbey navigates this transition and whether its innovative risk management practices can sustain its zero NPL ratio in a more diversified portfolio.
