AFD Secures $60 Million to Boost Nigeria’s Creative and Renewable Sectors

The Agence Française de Développement (AFD) has recently signed two loan agreements totaling $60 million with the Bank of Industry (BOI) and Sterling Bank, aimed at bolstering businesses in Nigeria’s creative industries, agriculture, and renewable energy sectors. The first agreement involves a $30 million loan to BOI targeted at enhancing financing for Nigeria's cultural and creative industries, including Nollywood and Afrobeats. The second agreement, also worth $30 million, comes from Proparco, AFD's private sector subsidiary, to Sterling Bank, focusing on renewable energy projects and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in agriculture.

This development is significant as it underscores the growing economic partnership between France and Nigeria, with France recently declaring Nigeria its primary trading partner in Sub-Saharan Africa. The funding is expected to create numerous job opportunities, particularly for the youth, as the creative sector alone contributes nearly 2% to Nigeria’s GDP and employs over four million people. By facilitating access to financing, these agreements aim to stimulate growth in sectors that are vital for Nigeria's economic diversification and resilience.

Looking ahead, stakeholders should monitor how these investments will influence Nigeria's economic landscape and its attractiveness to foreign investors. AFD's commitment to further discussions on infrastructure, healthcare, and energy efficiency indicates potential for broader economic collaboration. As Nigeria's relationship with France deepens, it could set a precedent for similar partnerships across Africa, potentially reshaping investment dynamics in the region and enhancing the continent's global economic standing.
