Block Integrates Bitcoin Lightning Payments for AI Agents via x402 Standard

Block has announced its partnership with the x402 Foundation, integrating Bitcoin Lightning payments into the x402 open payment standard. This move aims to facilitate efficient transactions for AI agents engaged in commerce.

The x402 standard enables AI agents and web services to autonomously handle payments for API access, data, and digital services. Block's addition of Lightning is seen as crucial for supporting the low-cost, high-volume transactions that agentic commerce requires.

Steve Lee, head of Block’s Bitcoin development initiative Spiral, emphasized that this integration is a significant step toward making Bitcoin a practical currency for both individuals and AI agents. He expressed enthusiasm for the potential of this initiative to reshape everyday transactions.

Block joins a prestigious group of supporters for the x402 Foundation, including tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services, as well as crypto firms like Coinbase and the Solana Foundation. This collaboration underscores a collective effort to drive AI-driven commerce.

This initiative builds on Block's involvement in the Universal Commerce Protocol, which aims to empower small businesses through AI-enhanced commerce solutions.
