Champion Breweries' Pre-Tax Profit Plummets Amid Soaring Finance Costs

Champion Breweries Plc has unveiled its unaudited financial results for Q3 2026, revealing a pre-tax profit of N917.52 million, a dramatic decline of 70.77% year-on-year from N3.14 billion during the same period in 2025. This downturn is attributed largely to a staggering 369.52% increase in net finance costs, which soared to N5.41 billion, consuming approximately 85% of the company’s operating profit.

Despite the profit decline, the company reported a remarkable 139.85% increase in revenue, totaling N51.41 billion, and a 47.50% rise in operating profit to N6.33 billion. This juxtaposition highlights the financial strain caused by rising finance costs, which are often linked to increased borrowing and unfavorable exchange rates. The recent acquisition of 80% of EnjoyBev B.V. also plays a crucial role in these results, as the integration of the new entity may have initially strained financial resources, albeit potentially enhancing future profitability.

Looking ahead, investors will be keenly observing the company’s performance in Q4 2026, as management anticipates stronger seasonal results. The sustainability of the thin operating margins seen in Q3 will be critical in determining whether this is a temporary setback or indicative of deeper structural issues. Additionally, as finance costs continue to impact profitability across various sectors in Nigeria, the broader implications for the stock market and investor sentiment cannot be overlooked, particularly in a region where currency stability remains a pressing concern.
