Cornerstone Insurance Reports Decline in Pre-Tax Profit Amid Revenue Growth

Cornerstone Insurance Plc has announced its unaudited financial results for the nine months ending September 30, 2026, revealing a 6.93% decline in pre-tax profit to N7.74 billion, down from N8.32 billion in the same period last year. While the company experienced a significant increase in insurance revenue, which rose by 16.70% to N43.31 billion, this growth did not translate into higher earnings due to escalating costs and financial pressures.

The insurance sector in Nigeria has been under scrutiny as companies like Cornerstone navigate a challenging economic landscape. Increased reinsurance expenses, which surged by 75.52% to N13.70 billion, alongside a significant rise in foreign exchange losses, have heavily impacted profitability. Despite the growth in insurance revenue, the net profit after tax fell by 8.56% to N7.41 billion, highlighting the ongoing struggle for insurers to manage costs effectively while expanding their market presence. This scenario is critical as it reflects broader trends in the African insurance market, where rising operational costs are increasingly squeezing margins.

Looking ahead, investors will be keen to monitor how Cornerstone Insurance adapts its strategies in response to these challenges. The company has indicated a focus on enhancing its underwriting operations and strengthening its capital base, which could be pivotal in improving profitability. Additionally, as the insurance sector grapples with inflationary pressures and fluctuating currency values, the performance of Cornerstone’s stock, which has seen a 23.7% decline year-to-date, will be closely watched for signs of recovery or further decline.
