The European Central Bank (ECB) is actively seeking partnerships with fintech companies and payment firms to explore the integration of AI agents in digital euro transactions. This initiative is part of the ECB's broader strategy to prepare for a digital euro pilot set to launch in 2027.
On Monday, the ECB opened applications for its digital euro innovation platform, which will be divided into two main components: hands-on testing of payment features and workshops focused on future applications of the digital euro.
The experimentation phase will take place from January to June 2027, where selected participants will work on developing prototypes for various innovative payment solutions, including e-receipts, multiparty transactions, and conditional payments.
In addition to the experimentation track, workshops will address topics such as AI-enabled payments, micropayments, and the potential uses of the digital euro in public services. A subset of participants will present their findings at the ECB's headquarters in Frankfurt.
The digital euro aims to serve as a central bank digital currency for retail payments across the euro area, complementing traditional cash. The ECB has already selected 36 banks and payment firms, including notable names like Revolut and Stripe, for a separate pilot program beginning in late 2027. However, any official issuance will require EU legislation and an ECB decision.
