First HoldCo Reports 60.84% Surge in Pre-Tax Profit, Signaling Strong Financial Resilience

First HoldCo Plc has announced a remarkable 60.84% year-on-year increase in its pre-tax profit, reaching N911.24 billion for the nine months ending September 30, 2026. This significant jump from N566.54 billion in the same period last year underscores the company’s strong operational performance, particularly in its third quarter, where pre-tax profit increased by 22.49% to N257.71 billion.

This impressive growth is noteworthy, especially as it comes amidst a contraction in interest earnings. The surge in profit after tax by 65.11% to N744.45 billion indicates that First HoldCo has effectively diversified its revenue streams, relying more on fee and commission income, gains from financial instruments, and lower impairment charges to offset declines in net interest income. The company’s gross revenue rose by 8.79% to N2.87 trillion, with commercial banking being the primary contributor to this growth.

The implications of First HoldCo's results extend beyond its balance sheet. This performance reflects a broader trend within the African financial sector, where companies are increasingly focusing on non-interest income to bolster profitability amid challenging interest rate environments. Investors and analysts will be keen to monitor how First HoldCo continues to navigate these challenges and whether its success can inspire similar strategies across the continent. Moving forward, stakeholders should watch for potential shifts in consumer lending and investment strategies, as well as how other financial institutions respond to these results.
