FMDQ Trading Turnover Surges to N551.23 Trillion in 2026, Driven by FX and OMO

The FMDQ Exchange has reported a remarkable trading turnover of N551.23 trillion (approximately $403.08 billion) for the first nine months of 2026. This figure underscores the robust activity in the Nigerian financial market, with foreign exchange (FX) and Open Market Operations (OMO) bills leading the charge, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the total turnover. The report reveals an average daily turnover of N3.03 trillion, showcasing the dynamic nature of trading across various financial instruments.

This significant turnover is crucial as it reflects the growing liquidity and depth of Nigeria's financial markets, particularly in the face of global economic uncertainties. The dominance of FX transactions, which reached N190.80 trillion, highlights the increasing reliance on foreign currency trading amidst fluctuating exchange rates and economic pressures. Furthermore, the rise in OMO turnover to N163.42 trillion indicates a strategic move by the Central Bank of Nigeria to manage liquidity and control inflation through short-term borrowing instruments.

Looking ahead, market participants should closely monitor the trends in FX and OMO transactions as they will likely influence monetary policy and investment strategies. The concentration of trading among a few major banks also raises questions about market competitiveness and the potential for systemic risks. As Nigeria's economy continues to evolve, the performance of the FMDQ Exchange could serve as a bellwether for broader trends in African and global financial markets, particularly in the context of emerging market currencies and investment flows.
