Geregu Power's Profit Plummets 80% Despite Beating Q3 Forecast

Geregu Power Plc has unveiled its financial results for the nine months ending September 30, 2026, revealing a pre-tax profit of N7.55 billion, a dramatic 79.85% decrease from N37.46 billion in the same period last year. The company's revenue also plummeted by 80.71%, falling to N25.35 billion from N131.47 billion, and profit after tax dropped by 76.54% to N5.89 billion.

This decline is primarily attributed to a significant contraction in electricity sales revenue, which has severely impacted profitability. Although Geregu managed to exceed its Q3 profit forecast with a pre-tax earnings of N3.98 billion—545.4% above expectations—this figure still pales in comparison to the previous year’s performance. The company's two main revenue streams, energy sales and capacity charges, were notably affected, indicating deeper issues within the operational framework of Nigeria's energy market.

The implications of these results extend beyond Geregu Power, reflecting broader challenges within Nigeria's energy sector. With administrative expenses surging by 127.29% and a significant decline in total assets, investors may grow increasingly wary of the sustainability of energy companies in the region. The market's reaction has already been telling, with Geregu's shares down 27.7% year-to-date, raising questions about investor confidence in the sector. Moving forward, stakeholders will be closely monitoring how Geregu and similar firms adapt to these challenges and whether any policy changes can revitalize the energy market in Nigeria.
