GOPAX Freezes Trading Amid Hacking Threat, Moves Assets to Cold Storage

South Korean cryptocurrency exchange GOPAX has taken the precautionary measure of suspending trading, deposits, and standard withdrawals following a hacking threat received via email. The decision, announced early Friday, was made to safeguard user assets, with the exchange stating that no actual hacking incident had occurred at the time of the announcement. GOPAX plans to transfer all crypto assets to cold wallets, a move in line with recommendations from financial regulators aimed at enhancing cybersecurity.

This suspension comes on the heels of increased scrutiny on the security practices of crypto exchanges in South Korea, particularly after the recent $6.3 billion hack of Binance. The Financial Services Commission (FSC) has urged exchanges to bolster their cold wallet holdings, mandating that at least 80% of customer assets be stored offline. GOPAX reported holding 80.54% of user assets in cold storage as of late September, which is just above the regulatory minimum. The heightened focus on cybersecurity is a response to alarming findings that identified deficiencies in cybersecurity protocols at 130 of 555 financial companies reviewed in the country.

Looking ahead, the situation at GOPAX could set a precedent for other exchanges in South Korea and beyond, emphasizing the need for robust security measures in the crypto space. As the industry grapples with rising threats, investors and users should remain vigilant and consider the security protocols of exchanges they utilize. The ongoing developments may also prompt further regulatory actions, potentially reshaping the landscape of cryptocurrency trading and security standards globally.
