Greece Welcomes First MiCA Crypto Providers Amid Binance Controversy

Greece has made a significant move by entering the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) register, adding four local providers: BCash, Xenios Blockchain Group, Capital Wallet Greece, and Piraeus Bank. This marks Greece's first participation in the MiCA framework.

While Greece celebrates this milestone, the spotlight remains on Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange. Binance's application to operate under MiCA was withdrawn in June, just before the Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC) made a formal decision. Reports suggested that ECB President Christine Lagarde intervened to block the application, a claim that HCMC has since denied.

The division of oversight for crypto providers in Greece is noteworthy, with the HCMC overseeing three of the new entrants and the Bank of Greece responsible for Piraeus Bank. This split reflects Greece's approach to implementing MiCA, allowing multiple authorities to manage regulatory responsibilities.

In response to the allegations regarding Lagarde's involvement, HCMC firmly rejected any assertions that its officials communicated with ECB representatives about Binance's application. The regulator emphasized that no such discussions took place, further complicating the narrative surrounding Binance's regulatory journey in Greece.

As the MiCA framework continues to evolve, the developments in Greece highlight both the opportunities and challenges facing crypto providers in the EU. Binance, while facing hurdles, remains committed to obtaining MiCA authorization in Europe.
