Investors Pour N12.14 Trillion into CBN's OMO Auctions Amid Falling Rates

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) wrapped up September with two Open Market Operations (OMO) auctions that generated an impressive N12.14 trillion in bids, significantly exceeding the N3.4 trillion offered. This strong demand, even as yields declined, highlights the resilience of investor interest in Nigerian fixed-income securities.

The context of these auctions is crucial. Following a substantial 350 basis points cut in the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) to 23%, the CBN's decision to maintain attractive yields—averaging around 17%—has kept both domestic and foreign investors engaged. Analysts suggest that the high yields, combined with a stable naira, make Nigerian assets appealing compared to global counterparts. David Adonri, CEO of Highcap Securities, noted that even with the MPR reduction, the absolute yield levels remain attractive, indicating that investors are not solely reacting to rate changes but are also drawn to the relative returns available.

Looking ahead, the ongoing demand for OMO bills suggests that the Nigerian fixed-income market may continue to attract significant capital. With broader participation from retail investors and a liquidity-rich environment, the dynamics of the market may shift further. As global economic conditions evolve, investors will be closely monitoring how these trends influence currency stability and the potential for shifts in equity investments.
