Jim Ovia Set to Earn N8.7 Billion in Zenith Bank's Increased Interim Dividend

Zenith Bank has announced a significant interim dividend payout for the first half of 2026, with founder Jim Ovia set to receive approximately N8.7 billion. This payout, amounting to N1.50 per share, marks a 20% increase from the N1.25 declared in the same period last year. Ovia’s substantial holdings, totaling around 5.8 billion shares, include both direct and indirect investments in the bank, which he founded in 1990.

This dividend increase is noteworthy as it comes despite a decline in profit after tax for the bank, which fell to N430.8 billion from N532.2 billion due to higher tax expenses. Nonetheless, the bank reported a profit before tax of N637.6 billion, indicating a 1.9% increase year-on-year. The decision to boost dividends reflects Zenith Bank's commitment to rewarding its shareholders even in a challenging fiscal environment. Ovia’s consistent ranking as one of Nigeria's top dividend beneficiaries highlights the importance of strong corporate governance and shareholder value in the banking sector.

Looking ahead, investors should monitor the upcoming Annual General Meeting where the proposed dividend will require ratification. Additionally, the broader implications of this payout could influence investor sentiment across the Nigerian stock market, potentially encouraging other companies to consider similar dividend increases. As African markets continue to evolve, the performance of key players like Zenith Bank will be crucial in shaping the investment landscape.
