Payward, the parent company of the cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, has successfully cleared the final regulatory hurdle to launch dirham (AED) trading in Dubai. The Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) granted Payward FZCO a virtual asset service provider (VASP) license on October 6, allowing the company to expand its digital asset services in the UAE. This approval follows a preliminary nod received in May 2026 and positions Kraken to offer spot and margin trading in AED-denominated pairs, with direct deposit and withdrawal capabilities expected to be available shortly.
This development is significant for several reasons. First, it underscores Dubai's growing reputation as a global crypto hub, attracting major players in the digital asset space. With 58 licensed providers now listed on VARA's public register, up from 49 earlier this year, the regulatory environment is becoming increasingly favorable for cryptocurrency activities. The UAE has been proactive in establishing a framework that supports innovation while ensuring investor protection, evidenced by other financial institutions like Standard Chartered and Capital.com also expanding their crypto offerings in the region.
Looking ahead, the launch of Kraken's services in the UAE could catalyze further adoption of cryptocurrencies in the Middle East and beyond. As more regulatory approvals are granted, we can expect increased competition among crypto exchanges, which may lead to enhanced services and lower fees for consumers. Investors and market watchers should keep an eye on how this expansion impacts trading volumes and user engagement within the UAE, as well as its potential ripple effects on global crypto markets.
