Mutual Benefits Assurance Sees Profit Decline Despite Revenue Growth

Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc has released its financial results for the nine months ending September 30, 2026, revealing a pre-tax profit of N13.89 billion, a 9.1% decline from N15.28 billion in the same period last year. The company reported an increase in insurance revenue to N65.16 billion, up 7.1% from N60.86 billion, driven primarily by its non-life insurance segment. However, the growth in revenue was overshadowed by a significant rise in insurance service expenses and a drop in investment income.

The increase in insurance revenue, particularly from motor and fire insurance, is a positive indicator for the sector, suggesting a growing demand for insurance products. However, the 24% rise in insurance service expenses, which reached N60.71 billion, has raised concerns about the sustainability of profit margins. Additionally, the company faced challenges in its investment portfolio, with net investment income falling by 14% to N9.91 billion due to foreign exchange losses and reduced profits from investment contracts. This combination of rising costs and declining investment returns has led to a worrying decline in profitability.

Looking ahead, stakeholders will be keen to see how Mutual Benefits Assurance adapts to these challenges. The recent uptick in third-quarter performance, where pre-tax profit surged to N7.54 billion, indicates potential for recovery if the company can manage its costs effectively. Investors will also be watching for broader trends in the African insurance market, as rising expenses could signal a need for strategic adjustments across the sector. Overall, the results underscore the complexities facing companies in the insurance industry, especially in a volatile economic environment.
