NEAR Token Plummets 7% Despite Approval of Major Issuance Cut Proposal

In a surprising market reaction, the NEAR token experienced a 7% decline on Tuesday, trading at approximately $3.82. This drop came shortly after the Near Protocol community overwhelmingly approved a proposal to cut the maximum annual issuance rate from 2.5% to 1.6% over the next two years. The proposal, known as HSP-029, received a staggering 99.9% support from participating voters, indicating strong community backing for this significant change.

This decision is crucial as it aims to reduce long-term token dilution, which can negatively affect the value of existing tokens. By cutting the projected issuance by 11.8 million NEAR over the next two years, the proposal also anticipates a decrease in gross staking yields, dropping from 5.2% to 3.3%. While the intention is to stabilize the token's value and enhance its scarcity, the immediate market response suggests that investors may be concerned about the implications for staking rewards and overall demand for the token.

Looking ahead, the proposal is currently under a 14-day veto window by the Security Council, and if it passes without objection, a 90-day grace period will follow before the changes take effect. Stakeholders should monitor how validators respond to the necessary technical upgrades and whether this issuance cut will ultimately bolster investor confidence or lead to further declines in NEAR's market value.
