NGX Group Chairman Advocates for African Capital Market Integration

At the Oxford Global Think Tank 2026 conference in Abuja, Alhaji (Dr) Umaru Kwairanga, the Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) Group, highlighted the urgent need for the integration of African capital markets. He emphasized that this integration should be the top priority over the next three years to facilitate cross-border investments and provide businesses with access to a broader pool of investors.

Kwairanga pointed out that Africa is rich in investment opportunities across various sectors, including infrastructure, manufacturing, and technology. However, he noted that the continent's capital markets are historically fragmented and underdeveloped, limiting their ability to mobilize the necessary investments. By fostering stronger connections among African exchanges, he believes that the continent can better support its economic transformation and attract more global capital. He also referenced existing initiatives like the African Exchanges Linkage Project as foundational steps toward deeper cooperation among exchanges.

Looking ahead, market participants should monitor the progress of the NGX Group's initiatives, particularly regarding the ongoing Dangote Refinery public offer, which aims to enhance regional integration by marketing shares across multiple African exchanges. As investor interest grows, it will be crucial to observe how these efforts influence overall market confidence and participation rates. Enhanced integration could potentially lead to a more robust and interconnected African financial landscape, ultimately benefiting both local and international investors.
