Nigerian Businesses Face Tax Burden and Insecurity, Yet Remain Optimistic

In a recent survey conducted by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), businesses in Nigeria have identified high or multiple taxation, insecurity, and elevated interest rates as their primary constraints as of September 2026. The survey indicates that these factors pose significant challenges to the operational environment for firms across various sectors, with taxation leading the concerns at an index of 67.1 points.

These findings are critical as they highlight the ongoing struggles that Nigerian businesses face in a challenging economic landscape. The high tax burden can stifle growth and investment, particularly for small and medium enterprises that are vital for job creation and economic stability. Insecurity remains a pressing issue, deterring both local and foreign investment, while high interest rates continue to limit access to affordable financing. Despite these hurdles, the Business Confidence Index stood at 13.4 points, reflecting a degree of optimism among firms, attributed to increased demand and ongoing economic diversification efforts.

Looking ahead, businesses are cautiously optimistic about the future, with expectations for the Business Confidence Index to rise to 23.6 points by December 2026 and reach 36.1 points by March 2027. This positive sentiment is crucial for the broader economic recovery and could impact the Nigerian currency and stock markets positively if sustained. Investors should monitor how the government addresses taxation and insecurity, as these factors will significantly influence the investment climate and overall economic health in Nigeria and potentially across the African continent.
