Nigerian Stocks Surge by N2 Trillion in October, Driven by Dangote Cement Rally

Nigerian stocks experienced a notable rebound in October, achieving a market capitalization increase of around N2 trillion, rising from N163.1 trillion at the end of September to N165 trillion. The All-Share Index recorded a gain of 1.23% during the month, bringing its year-to-date return to an impressive 63.42%. This recovery was largely attributed to a late rally in the final trading week, which reversed earlier losses and secured a positive finish for the month.

The market's initial performance in October was less promising, with the All-Share Index declining by 0.97% in the first week. However, strong gains in major stocks, particularly Dangote Cement, which surged by 27% in the final week, played a crucial role in reversing the trend. The cement giant's stock rose from N1,010 to N1,420, highlighting the significant buying interest that emerged towards the end of the month, especially following news of a major stake acquisition by investor Femi Otedola.

This rally is significant not only for the Nigerian market but also for broader African and global stock trends. The concentration of gains in a few large-cap stocks, while other sectors like banking and insurance faced declines, indicates a market that is still grappling with volatility. Investors should watch for how earnings reports from various sectors will influence market sentiment in the coming months. Additionally, the performance of Dangote Cement may set the tone for other industrial stocks, potentially impacting regional market dynamics.
