Nigeria's Money Market to See N2.499 Trillion Inflows Amid Liquidity Crunch

Nigeria's Financial Markets Dealers Association (FMDA) has projected that the money market will welcome approximately N2.499 trillion in inflows starting October 12, 2026. This influx is largely attributed to the maturation of Open Market Operations (OMO) bills, even as the banking system grapples with a 23.68% decline in liquidity, dropping from N4.86 trillion to N3.71 trillion.

This significant liquidity contraction is primarily due to aggressive liquidity management by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which has been actively engaging in OMO auctions and Treasury bill issuances. The CBN sold N3.31 trillion in OMO instruments while only N2.17 trillion matured, resulting in a net liquidity absorption of about N1.14 trillion. Such measures are critical as they aim to stabilize the financial system amid fluctuating market conditions.

As the CBN navigates this complex landscape, the upcoming week will be pivotal. The management of the N2.409 trillion expected from OMO maturities will be crucial. If the CBN opts for fresh OMO auctions, it could absorb much of this liquidity, maintaining tight funding conditions and potentially elevating short-term interest rates. Conversely, if a significant portion of these inflows remains in the banking system, liquidity could improve, leading to a decrease in short-term yields. Investors and market watchers should closely monitor the CBN's actions, as they will significantly influence both local and regional financial markets.
