Nigeria's Q2 2026 FX Flows Surge to $22.5 Billion, Highest Since 2019

Nigeria's net foreign exchange (FX) flows soared to $22.5 billion in the second quarter of 2026, according to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). This figure represents the highest level since Q4 2019, reflecting a notable recovery in the country’s FX position. The increase was primarily attributed to a significant decline in outflows, which fell from $11.05 billion in Q1 to $8.93 billion in Q2, while inflows remained relatively stable.

This surge in FX flows is particularly significant for Nigeria's economy, as it suggests a strengthening of investor confidence and a potential rebound from previous economic challenges. The CBN's data indicates that autonomous sources, which accounted for the bulk of inflows, played a crucial role in this recovery. Inflows through these channels reached $8.62 billion in June alone, underscoring the importance of private sector participation in stabilizing the FX market. Additionally, a 45% increase in portfolio investments to $6.51 billion in Q2 further supports the narrative of a revitalized economic landscape.

Looking ahead, market analysts will be keenly observing how these trends develop in the coming quarters. The mixed performance of foreign direct investment, which saw a decline despite overall capital importation rising, suggests that while there are positive signals, challenges remain. Investors will also be interested in how the CBN manages FX policies to sustain this momentum and what implications it may have for the broader African and global markets, particularly as other nations grapple with similar economic pressures.
