Nigeria's Utomi Proposes N500/$ Exchange Rate to Cut Food Prices by 50%

Professor Pat Utomi, a prominent political economist and member of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has set an ambitious target to strengthen the naira to N500 per dollar. In a recent statement, he outlined this proposal as part of the party's economic manifesto, which also includes plans for significant infrastructure investments and structural reforms aimed at reducing the cost of living and inflation in Nigeria.

Utomi's vision is rooted in the belief that a stronger naira could drastically lower the prices of essential goods, with projections suggesting that staple food items could see price reductions of up to 50%. For instance, he estimates that a loaf of bread could drop from N1,750 to N800, and a 50kg bag of imported rice could fall from N55,000 to N27,500. This proposal comes at a time when Nigeria's economy is showing signs of improvement, including a strengthening naira and rising foreign reserves, which reached over $55 billion.

However, achieving these ambitious targets will depend on various factors, including the availability of foreign exchange, domestic production capacity, and external economic conditions. While Utomi's proposals could offer a roadmap for alleviating poverty and improving living standards, they also highlight the complexities of Nigeria's economic landscape, where inflation and production costs remain significant challenges. Investors and market watchers should closely monitor the government's response to these proposals and any subsequent economic policies that may emerge, as they could have far-reaching implications for both local and global markets.
