Petrobras Leverages Cardano for Tracking Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Diesel

Petrobras, Brazil's state-controlled oil company, has developed two innovative blockchain applications utilizing Cardano to track sustainability data for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and its renewable diesel, Diesel R. This initiative is part of an ongoing research collaboration with PUC-Rio's Ledger Labs.

The first application focuses on tokenizing environmental attributes associated with SAF into digital tokens, preventing the same sustainability claim from being reused. This Book-and-Claim model allows the environmental benefits to be assigned to various stakeholders, such as airlines and passengers, even if the fuel is used elsewhere.

Known as CS-SAF tokens, these digital assets include metadata aligned with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). Passengers can claim these tokens through an app and receive a certificate linked to their travel and environmental impact.

The second application establishes digital checkpoints to monitor the production, transportation, and usage of Diesel R. This data can aid in Scope 3 reporting, which addresses indirect emissions across a company's value chain, further promoting sustainability in the energy sector.

These projects stem from a collaboration that began in 2023, focusing on blockchain education for Petrobras employees and expanding to energy-sector research. While the Cardano Foundation has not disclosed specific fuel volumes or a timeline for broader deployment, the initiative marks a significant step towards integrating blockchain technology in sustainability efforts.
