Sberbank Gains Approval for Crypto Trading, Set to Launch in December

Russia's largest bank, Sberbank, has recently secured approval from the Bank of Russia to commence trading cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and Tether (USDT). The bank is gearing up for a launch on December 1, 2026, and has already begun preliminary testing of crypto transactions through its SberBank Online platform. This development is part of a broader regulatory framework that was established following the implementation of new crypto rules in September 2023, which brought exchange operators and custodians under the central bank's oversight.

This approval is significant not only for Sberbank but also for the Russian financial landscape as it signals a shift towards a more structured approach to cryptocurrency. The Bank of Russia's updated register now includes ten authorized crypto exchange operators and six digital custodians, indicating a growing acceptance of digital currencies within the country's banking system. However, it is important to note that while trading is being authorized, the use of cryptocurrencies for payments remains prohibited, highlighting the cautious stance of Russian regulators.

Looking ahead, market participants should monitor how Sberbank's entry into the crypto trading space influences both local and global markets. The bank's established infrastructure and customer base could pave the way for wider adoption of cryptocurrencies in Russia, potentially impacting other nations in the region. Additionally, the success of Sberbank's crypto products may prompt further regulatory developments, as other financial institutions may seek similar approvals, thereby reshaping the crypto landscape in Africa and beyond.
