SEC Launches National Savings Scheme to Boost Nigeria's Capital Market Participation

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Nigeria has launched a new National Savings Scheme designed to facilitate investment participation across various income levels. Announced by SEC Director-General Dr. Emomotimi Agama at the National Capital Market Conference in Abuja, this initiative is part of the broader Nigerian Capital Market Master Plan (NCMMP) 2.0, which aims to expand the capital market significantly by 2036.

This scheme is particularly significant as it seeks to bridge the gap between the rapid growth of Nigeria's capital market and the relatively low participation rate among its citizens. Despite impressive market valuations—evidenced by the market capitalization surpassing N150 trillion—only a small fraction of Nigerians are actively investing in financial assets. The SEC aims to change this by providing a structured savings and investment platform managed by professional fund managers, thereby promoting financial inclusion for those previously excluded from the capital market.

Looking ahead, the success of the National Savings Scheme will hinge on its implementation and the ability to attract a broader base of investors. The SEC has set ambitious targets, aiming for 30 million investors by 2030 and a market expansion from N250 trillion to N750 trillion by 2036. However, challenges remain, including the need for credible investment opportunities and increased company listings to ensure sustainable market growth. As the initiative unfolds, stakeholders will be closely monitoring its impact on both individual investors and the overall health of Nigeria's financial ecosystem.
