September Sees Crypto Hacks Exceed $768M, Marking 2026's Worst Month

September 2026 marked a grim milestone for the cryptocurrency sector, recording the highest losses from hacks this year, totaling over $768 million. Two major breaches accounted for a significant portion of these losses.

The Bitget hack resulted in a staggering $388 million theft, while the Liquid Network exploit led to a loss of $320 million, although reports indicate that over $270 million from this incident was later recovered.

Blockchain security firms PeckShield and CertiK reported a surge in security incidents, with PeckShield identifying 55 significant hacks resulting in $766.5 million stolen, and CertiK recording 97 incidents with estimated losses of $768.4 million.

Other notable hacks during September included Safe Wallet, DCENT, and Duelbits, which suffered losses of $7.8 million, $6 million, and $5.9 million, respectively. CertiK’s data reveals that the total number of security incidents in 2026 has reached 656, resulting in a cumulative loss of $2.68 billion.

“September was a stark reminder of how quickly the threat landscape can shift,” CertiK stated, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced security measures in the crypto space.
