Standard Chartered Revises Stablecoin Forecast to $2 Trillion by 2030

Standard Chartered has recently updated its forecast for the stablecoin market, now projecting a market capitalization of $2 trillion by 2030, a two-year delay from its previous estimate. The bank's report highlights that while the overall market value has plateaued at around $309 billion, transaction activity is on the rise. This indicates that existing stablecoins are being utilized more frequently, rather than new supply driving growth.

This shift in stablecoin dynamics is significant for both the cryptocurrency ecosystem and traditional finance. Geoffrey Kendrick, head of digital assets research at Standard Chartered, identified four distinct stablecoin markets, each with its competitive landscape. Tether’s USDt leads in emerging-market savings, while Circle’s USDC dominates payments in developed markets. The competition is heating up, particularly in payment systems, where new entrants are challenging established players. How these issuers manage the yield generated from stablecoin reserves will be crucial in determining market share and sustainability.

Looking ahead, the evolving regulatory landscape in the United States could have profound implications for stablecoin usage globally. With new regulations and accounting standards on the horizon, businesses may find it easier to integrate stablecoins into their operations. As these developments unfold, stakeholders in both the cryptocurrency and traditional finance sectors should closely monitor how these changes will affect market dynamics and investor sentiment.
