StarkWare has announced a significant reduction in the cost of preparing quantum-safe Bitcoin transactions, dropping it to under $67 from approximately $320. This change comes after a weeklong optimization challenge aimed at enhancing the efficiency of the process.
The optimization challenge, which involved collaboration between StarkWare, Yukon Research, and Eigen Labs, resulted in 62 accepted improvements that cut the estimated GPU computation costs by about 79%. This makes the quantum-safe solution more financially feasible for Bitcoin holders.
Initially introduced as a "last resort measure" due to its high costs and complexity, the Quantum-Safe Bitcoin (QSB) design allows for hash-based protection against potential quantum attacks without altering Bitcoin's consensus rules. StarkWare emphasizes that while the recent cost reductions are promising, they still advocate for more comprehensive protocol-level changes for long-term quantum protection.
As concerns grow about the potential threat of quantum computing to Bitcoin's security, the advancements in QSB could provide a crucial layer of defense for users with significant unexposed balances. However, the latest optimizations have only been validated through benchmark tests, and further developments are anticipated.
