United Nigeria Airlines to Raise N20 Billion in Groundbreaking Commercial Paper Issuance

United Nigeria Airlines Company Limited has announced plans to issue N20 billion in commercial paper, marking a significant milestone as the first domestic airline in Nigeria to access the short-term debt market. This initiative aims to bolster the airline's financial standing and support its ambitious expansion strategy, which includes increasing its fleet and extending its operational reach.

The proposed issuance consists of two series of commercial papers with tenors of 270 days and 364 days, under a broader N100 billion commercial paper program. The airline's financial performance has shown remarkable growth, with revenues surging from N10.3 billion in 2021 to N90.8 billion in 2025, and it recorded a revenue of N95.6 billion in just the first half of 2026. This financial success underscores the airline's potential to attract investors and indicates a robust demand for its services.

This move is particularly important in the context of Nigeria's evolving corporate financing landscape, where companies are increasingly turning to commercial papers as an alternative to traditional bank loans. In 2025 alone, Nigerian corporates raised N1.61 trillion through such issuances, reflecting a growing trend among businesses to seek flexible funding solutions amid rising borrowing costs. As United Nigeria Airlines embarks on its expansion plan, including the addition of six aircraft and new international routes, market observers will be keen to see how this issuance influences investor confidence and the broader Nigerian aviation sector.
