US Government Considers Boosting Dollar-Backed Stablecoins Internationally

The US government is reportedly considering a strategic initiative to promote the use of dollar-backed stablecoins internationally, as part of its efforts to reinforce the US dollar's status as the world's reserve currency. This initiative could involve collaboration with private-sector companies and multiple federal agencies.

According to a Bloomberg report, the initiative may include the Treasury Department, State Department, and the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC). The goal is to expand the international adoption of dollar-denominated stablecoins, which could also increase demand for US Treasurys.

This move comes amid growing competition from other nations developing their own digital payment systems. Notably, China's digital yuan is being utilized in cross-border transactions through Project mBridge, while the European Central Bank is preparing to pilot a digital euro by 2027.

US officials have linked the growth of dollar-backed stablecoins to maintaining the dollar's global influence. In previous statements, officials highlighted that these stablecoins could generate significant demand for US government debt, further solidifying the dollar’s position in the global economy.

The Treasury is actively implementing the GENIUS Act, which aims to establish a regulatory framework for payment stablecoins. Recent proposals for public comment on stablecoin issuance are part of this effort to cement the dollar's role as the world’s reserve currency.
