New York and Wyoming financial regulators have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at improving the oversight of cryptocurrency companies operating in both states. This agreement facilitates the sharing of supervisory information, which is crucial for streamlining licensing reviews and coordinating examinations.
The MOU, announced by the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) and the Wyoming Division of Banking, applies to firms already regulated in either state and those seeking approval in both jurisdictions. This collaboration is expected to enhance efficiency in regulatory processes.
Under the agreement, regulators will share analysis and historical examination data, allowing for expedited pathways for certain firms. Companies with an existing license for at least three years and no enforcement actions can expect a decision from the second regulator within six months.
This partnership is notable as it connects two states with differing regulatory approaches to crypto. While New York has enforced stringent licensing standards through its BitLicense, Wyoming has adopted a more accommodating stance with crypto-focused laws and specialized banking charters.
