AIICO Insurance Plc commenced operations in Nigeria in 1963 as an agency office of American Life Insurance Company (ALICO), which was a subsidiary of American International Group (AIG) at the time. The company was formally incorporated, registered, and licensed in Nigeria as American Life Insurance Company Limited in 1970, initially offering life insurance services. It later became known as American International Insurance Company Limited (AIICO) following the acquisition of a 60% stake by the Federal Government of Nigeria, and subsequently listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 1990 after both the Nigerian government and AIG divested their stakes.
