Wema Bank PLC, Nigeria's longest-surviving indigenous bank, began its journey on May 2, 1945, as Agbonmagbe Bank Limited, founded by Chief Mathew Adekoya Okupe. Initially established to provide financial services in Western Nigeria, the bank expanded its branch network in key cities. It was subsequently acquired by the Western Nigeria Marketing Board and rebranded as Wema Bank Limited in 1969. The institution evolved into a public limited liability company in 1987 and was listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 1990, trading under the symbol WEMABANK. By 2001, Wema Bank obtained a Universal Banking License from the Central Bank of Nigeria, allowing it to offer a diverse range of financial services across the nation. The bank operates as a full-service commercial bank, offering a comprehensive suite of financial solutions encompassing retail, SME, and corporate banking. Its core products and services include various loan facilities, investment opportunities, treasury management, trade services, and financial advisory. A significant innovation is ALAT By Wema, recognized as Africa's first fully digital bank, which extends the bank's reach across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria without the need for physical branches. The bank's operations are primarily concentrated within Nigeria, serving customers across the South-West, South-South, Abuja, and Lagos zones, with Lagos contributing a substantial portion of its business activity.
